“We do innovation better than anyone in our industry,” says John Donovan, Senior Executive Vice President, AT&T Technology and Network Operations. “And now we’re ready to kick it into overdrive.” John’s blog explains how the AT&T Foundry program is driving innovation, the engine of AT&T.
In just a few months, we’ll expand our AT&T Foundry innovation center program by opening two new facilities in Atlanta and the Dallas area. That will bring the total number of AT&T Foundry centers to five worldwide, a $100 million+ investment that gives developers and start-ups a unique opportunity to connect their entrepreneurial spark to our high-octane expertise.
Atlanta will focus on technologies around our new home automation and security product Digital Life, all things wireless, the connected car and other consumer platforms. Imagine a world where your car accesses your work schedule in the cloud, suggests alternate driving routes to get you to your meetings on time, and lets your house know when you’re on your way home so it can crank up the air conditioning. The facility is located adjacent to Georgia Tech and is being sponsored by Cisco. Having such strong collaborators will help us push even harder to create cool new products to enhance and simplify your life.
Just north of Dallas in the city of Plano, we’ll be launching a facility dedicated to Machine-to-Machine and Connected Device technology. The M2M/CD location will be just one floor above one of our existing AT&T Foundry locations. That proximity will enable the M2M/CD team to rapidly prototype hardware projects around the so-called ‘Internet of Things’ and then collaborate, when needed, with their counterparts downstairs to develop the software for these prototypes.
This is the world of ‘smart’ devices, from cars that can park themselves in crowded parking garages, to clothing with embedded sensors that let you track your heart rate and other medical information. Again, the goal is to identify groundbreaking ideas, whether inside or outside AT&T, and turn them into products and services as quickly as possible.
That’s what makes the AT&T Foundry unique in the industry. They’re launching pads for the next generation of cutting-edge applications and services that will improve how we all live. Our accomplishments at the AT&T Foundry are getting noticed. Since the program launched in 2011, we’ve launched dozens of products into the market, helped turn start-up companies into superstar acquisitions, and garnered accolades around the world. For example, the AT&T Foundry recently won top honours for Innovative Collaborations as part of Pipeline magazine’s 2013 Innovation Awards.
These awards recognize prominent telecommunications industry innovators for their advancements in technologies, products and deployments. More than 130 nominations were submitted from around the globe. Two projects – video bill and Self-Optimizing Network – that were born in the AT&T Foundry also won top awards in their categories. And AT&T won Service Provider of the Year.
Innovation is the engine of AT&T. At the AT&T Foundry, we identify ground-breaking technologies, collaborate with the best developers, designers and engineers around the world, and get great new apps and services to our customers faster than previously possible. And, with Atlanta and the new Dallas location coming online, we’re accelerating our momentum.
